In 2021, grape harvests in France are likely to reach a record low level

The Ministry for Agriculture indicates that spells of springtime frost, blossom drop without pollination and various vine diseases have all increased losses of production in French vineyards.

It is predicted in 2021, for French wine production “a record low level, below those of 1991 and 2017, also affected by severe frost in springtime.” This announcement was made on 6th August 2021, by the Statistics Department of the Ministry for Agriculture. Estimations established on 1st August 2021 show that French wine production in 2021 will be between 32.6 and 35.6 million hectolitres, meaning a 24 to 30% lower level compared with 2020.

In total, yields this year will be similar to those seen in 1977, a vintage in which the grape harvest was reduced by springtime frost that ravaged vineyards and by heavy rainfall during summer.

In the months of June and July 2021, damage caused by mildew was been particularly encouraged by frequent summer downpours.
