June 30, 2025Commanderie de Bordeaux in Copenhagen. Vertical Tasting of Château Léoville Las Cases, on 4th June 2025
Maître Carl Jensen
On June the 4th the Commanderie de Bordeaux in Copenhagen hosted a vertical Leoville Las Cases tasting with 36 participants at the Brasserie Salon.
The tasting consisted of these wines and vintages:
Clos de Marquis 2000
Ch. Leoville Las Cases, 2. Cru 1985
Ch. Leoville Las Cases, 2. Cru 1986
Ch. Leoville Las Cases, 2. Cru 1989
Ch. Leoville Las Cases, 2. Cru 1991
Ch. Leoville Las Cases, 2. Cru 1995
Ch. Leoville Las Cases, 2. Cru 1996
Ch. Leoville Las Cases, 2. Cru 2000
Ch. Leoville Las Cases, 2. Cru 2001
Ch. Leoville Las Cases, 2. Cru 2002
Ch. Leoville Las Cases, 2. Cru 2012
This tasting confirmed our great expectations and in some cases clearly exceeded them.
Only one flawed bottle out of 44 is very respectable and the rest all put smiles on people’s faces. A great experience.
The vintages 1985, 1996 and 2000 stood out as was to be expected. Magnificent wines. 1986 and 1995 not far behind - which by the way as an abnormal term for wines that great.
As you all know, relativity is a difficult partner in wine tastings.
On the more surprising front - at least to some of us - 2012 was rather open and forthcoming. It will develop further from here for years to come, but is already drinking very well indeed. Our prejudice generally speaking is, that LLC needs time to fully flourish.
As an example the great 2000 vintage doesn't seem to be at it's peak yet. After 25 years.
And finally the 1991 LLC deserves praise. To produce such an elegant wine in a year that was so challenging, that in my book truly deserves a Bordeaux toujours Bordeaux salute. Chapeau !
