The 2020 grape harvests continue with red varieties in the Bordeaux region, picking in the blazing sunshine

2020 will be a Vintage etched on our memory for two reasons: its earliness and the context of the Covid-19 pandemic, which takes the edge off the pleasure of this harvesting period, despite the glorious sunshine and summer temperatures.

After the return to school at the beginning of September, the week of 7th September saw the start of harvesting red grapes in certain sectors of the Bordeaux wine region.

On the Right Bank, some properties already began picking grapes from young vines of Merlot, the first of the red Bordeaux varieties to reach ripeness, in the week of 7th September and the majority continued to harvest in the following week.

On the Left Bank, harvests are beginning for many châteaux in the week commencing 14th September. For the Saint-Estèphe Appellation, for example, picking should begin on Wednesday 16th September.

Everywhere in the Bordeaux winegrowing region, properties are implementing anti-Covid-19 measures to protect their teams and harvesters. In 2020, at total of 14 000 seasonal workers are expected to come and harvest the Bordeaux grapes. Christophe Château, Director of Communication at the CIVB (Bordeaux Wine Trade Council), reminds us that if all the prevention and control measures recommended by the health authorities are complied with by wine estates, there should be no risk of contagion.

At Château Carbonnieux, in the Pessac-Léognan Appellation, Eric Perrin is employing a team of 80 seasonal workers this year and prevention measures are being reinforced with the support of the MSA (Agricultural Health Insurance Authority) and the ARS (Region Health Authority).
