The Commanderie de Bordeaux des Chinois en France (CBCF), in partnership with LooLooLook Gallery in Paris, is honoured to present "Au Fil de la Matière," an exceptional artistic encounter held on September 11th, 2025, from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., during its Gala Dinner at the prestigious Château Angelus in Saint-Emilion.
This evening brought together two artists who seem to be complete opposites, yet who complement each other perfectly: Kartini Thomas, a French-American ceramic sculptor with a playful and organic language, and Liu Xueshan, a Chinese lacquer artist with a patient and age-old gesture. Together, they unveil a unique collection of natural lacquer sculptures, the result of a rare collaboration, which blends Western fantasy and Asian artisanal tradition.
Entitled "Au fil de la matière," the series is distinguished by a meticulous work of layering, sanding, and polishing, revealing the mysterious depth of the lacquer. Each work shimmers like living skin, offering iridescent plays of light that transform the surface depending on the angle of view. The forms, by turns playful or meditative, vibrate with a subtle tension between lightness and solemnity.
Three exceptional pieces were especially created for the CBCF 2025 induction ceremony. Adorned in black, gold, and opalescent tones, they celebrate the moment, the ritual, and the connection between cultures, embodying a rainbow of materials and symbols. "Au fil de la matière" is more than an exhibition: it is a sensory and symbolic exploration of the language of forms, a synesthetic journey where lacquer becomes a bridge between East and West, between know-how and imagination, between silence and emotion.
