Commanderie de Bordeaux in Paris - Dinner with Château Pavie-Macquin and Château Larcis-Ducasse, 20th June 2023

Just before summer began, the Commanderie de Bordeaux in Paris held a Gala Dinner evening on of June 20th at the superb Hotel de La Païva, property of the Travellers Club, on the Champs Elysées, with wines from two prestigious Saint-Émilion estates: Premier Grand Cru Classé Saint-Emilion, Château Larcis-Ducasse and Château Pavie-Macquin, in the presence of Ariane Ariane Gratiot, whose family has owned Château Larcis-Ducasse since 1893, and David Suire, oenologist and Technical Director of Château Larcis-Ducasse.

Both estates grow Merlot predominantly.

The wines of Pavie-Macquin draw from their clay-limestone soil powerfulness and minerality.

The magnificent vineyard of Larcis-Ducasse, facing south and terraced, rests on a mosaic of soils: limestone on the plateau, clay-limestone for the Grande Côte, molasses (iron-rich sandstone), sand and clay at the foot of the slope.

The evening began, on the terrace, allowing us to enjoy the warmth of the evening, with a tasting of the two second wines of the domains: Murmure de Larcis Ducasse 2019 (second wine since 2010) and Les Chênes de Macquin 2017 (referring to the oak trees that border the vineyard).

The dinner, interspersed by David Suire’s fascinating explanations, enabled us to appreciate and compare two by two several vintages of Larcis Ducasse (2018, 2012 and 2006) and Pavie Macquin (2015, 2014 and 2009), which were all a perfect match with the delicious meal, especially the shoulder of lamb confit.

It was a superb evening!
