A tribute to Lucien Lurton - A great man of the Médoc and the Bordeaux winegrowing region

By his vision, his innovations, his determination, his talent as a winegrower and businessman, Lucien Lurton has left his mark on the history of the Médoc and the Bordeaux wine region.

Born in 1925 in the Entre-deux-Mers, his grandfather, Léonce Récapet, also a very talented businessman, made a fortune with the family distillery.

In 1954, Lucien Lurton received as an inheritance from his grandfather, Château Brane-Cantenac, Classified 2nd Great Growth in 1855, Margaux, a property in great difficulty in the post-war period and almost destroyed by the historic frost of 1956. With his wife Marie-Jeanne, he succeeded by relentless hard work in saving and bringing back to life this superb wine estate at the beginning of the 1960s.

Over the decades, through his passion for magnificent terroirs, he made the acquisition of numerous properties in the Médoc, the Graves and Entre-deux-Mers.

So, between 1961 and 1980, Lucien Lurton invested, by buying:
Château Durfort-Vivens, Château Climens, Château Villegeorge, Château Tour de Bessan, Château Haut-Nouchet, Château Camarsac, Château Bouscaut, and lastly Château Desmirail.

From the 1990s onwards, Lucien Lurton passed on his estates to his children.

Lucien Lurton was indeed an eminent figure of the Médoc, a loyal defender of this region. On 25th March 2023, after an extraordinary life, filled with success, he passed away peacefully at the age of 97.
