Commanderie de Bordeaux in Madrid. Summer Event with the Great Classified Growths of Sauternes & Barsac, on 23rd June 2025

As part of its Summer Event, on 23rd June 2025, the Commanderie de Bordeaux in Madrid presented the prestigious sweet wines of Sauternes and Barsac . Professionals and wine lovers discovered the essence and versatility of these jewels of Bordeaux on a day that united tradition, gastronomy and celebration under the magical night of San Juan.

The Council of the Grands Crus Classés of 1855, led by Sylvain Boivert and the Sauternes and Barsac designation of origin -chaired by Guillaume Lefebvre-, chose Madrid as the launch of a tour that will tour the capitals of Europe to promote these extraordinary wines over the coming months.

The Commanderie de Bordeaux in Madrid, a non-profit association that acts as an embassy for all Bordeaux wines in Spain, closed its activities for the 2024-2025 academic year with this event. The chateaux and representatives who were present were:

• Château NAIRAC

• Château de MALLE

• Château DOISY VEDRINES

• Château SIGALAS RABAUD

• Château GUIRAUD

• Château SUDUIRAUT

• Château LA TOUR BLANCHE

Professional tasting

The day kicked off at the Madrid headquarters of the Federation of Spirits, where attendees - including expert journalists and sommeliers from large restaurants and hotels in Madrid - tasted two vintages of each of the chateaux: one, the one currently on the market; and an old emblematic vintage of each (some with differences of up to 20 years).

The representatives of each winery were able to comment on each of their projects, as well as highlighting the aging potential of these wines. The debate was served, the future of sweet liqueur wines and the consequences of global warming on the production of these wines of "noble rot" were some of the topics discussed with great interest.

A boost to Bordeaux wine in Spain

At the beginning of the Summer Chapter, Daniel de Busturia (Maître d'Honneur) and Javier Fernández Piera (Chancelier) presented the Bordeaux Disciple diploma to Cándido Blanco, representative of the company En Copa de Balón, for his outstanding work in the dissemination of the culture and wines of Bordeaux through its distribution, hospitality establishments, and above all, wine bars such as La Casita, recently opened and very successful, which has a wine cellar from Bordeaux and has already hosted some of the meetings of the Commanderie in Madrid.

Gastronomic fusion in San Juan

In the evening, the celebration continued under the night of San Juan with an outdoor dinner designed by the Galician chef Diego Guerra. The extraordinary menu that put the wines to the test and enhanced their richness and complexity, included dishes such as Cockles with Green Curry, Traditional Sardines, Galician Beef Cuts on barbecue and even a live Octopus station.

During the evening, Commandeurs and professionals toasted and shared impressions in a pleasant and relaxed atmosphere. But as is tradition, there was a time for the solemnity that Bordeaux wines usually have. The day concluded with a multitudinous toast under the skies of Madrid, closing the night of San Juan in an atmosphere of camaraderie and admiration for the wines of Sauternes and Barsac.

The Commanderie de Bordeaux in Madrid reaffirms its commitment to wine culture through experiences that combine tastings, gastronomy and recognition of promoters in the sector. The creation of the "Promenade Bordelaise" (a series of educational lunches dedicated to each village with AOC de Bordeaux), and the traditional annual trip, more than 100 wines from 50 wineries have been tasted, and an event has been held each month.
