"Bordeaux 2020 Vintage Tasting", Commanderie de Bordeaux in New Orleans, Tuesday 27th April 2021

Mr Scott Levy – Maître of the Commanderie de Bordeaux in New Orleans

The “Bordeaux 2020 Vintage Tasting”, for the New Orleans Commanderie was held at The Windsor Court Hotel, in a private room, on Tuesday 27th April 2021.

We set up our tasting in flights and started with the red wines and moved to the white wines and finished with the Moelleux and Barsac

General Summary

The 2020 reds showed surprisingly quite well. Deep coloured, with intense, focused aromas on the nose and lovely concentration, roundness and expressive pure fruit on the palate. Everyone, retail buyers and restaurant buyers and Commander de Bordeaux consumers look forward to enjoying the 2020s.

The 2020 whites showed more of their youth and several still had some residual sugar, which will finish fermenting out over the spring.

Highlights

Chateau Turcaud - Bordeaux Rose: showed great and several inquired about pricing

Chateau Pascaud - Bordeaux Superieur red : deep fruit, plump round style with nice minerality and oaky notes. A very well made Bord Supérieur.

Chateau d'Aiguilhe : very nice structure, depth and class

Chateau Dalem : showed a bit tight. But showed ripe, juicy red fruits with nice power. Well-knit tannins. Retailers said it is a great wine to bring Napa Cab drinkers into Bordeaux (yes, knowing that this is primarily Merlot)

Chateau Les Combes : this wine seemed to show the best. Tasted very much like a finished wine, ready for bottling, if not already in bottle.  Great wine. Classic St Emilion satellite. Round, ripe fruit with very soft, integrated tannins. Great balance and class here.  A must buy (price dependant). I for one will look for this wine

Chateau Fonplegade : a big jump in quality and style. But it is SE GCC. Shows a lot of promise. Really nice structure here. Concentrated, powerful crushed ripe red fruits with balanced acidity and tannins. Nice long finish

Chateau Brown : will be fun to see how this evolves. Showed a lot of mouth-coating concentrated fruit. Very round with nice Pessac grip

Chateau Rauzan Gassies : front and mid palate were really nice. Finished a bit odd with smoky, toasty, almost toasted marshmellow finish. This should develop well and should end up as a very solid wine.

Chateau Beychevelle : showed great. A lot of nice dry extract. Oak is still integrating. Nicely assimilated tannins with balancing acidity. Long concentrated fruit finish

Chateau Lafon Rochet : another wine that showed great and was almost ready to drink now. Well structured, with great balance and nice lively acidity.  Love this.

The white wines

Chateau Citran, Chateau Motte Maucourt and Chateau Couhins showed the best and had the best balance.

Le Blanc de Monsieur Ducourt : this is a fun style. I enjoyed it.

Chateau Doisy Daene : soooooo good. Very nice crisp acidity. Lovely apple developing towards white peach. Lovely !
