The 2020 harvests in the Bordeaux region have begun

In the Bordeaux region, harvests began mid-August for dry white and sparkling wines, two weeks in advance compared to the past few years, because of weather conditions, the Bordeaux Wine Trade Council informs us.

Grapes for Bordeaux sparkling wines are usually the first to be picked and this year harvests began on 13th August. At certain wine estates of the Pessac-Léognan Appellation, harvests started on 15th August.

From 17th August, harvesting also began for the Graves white and dry white Bordeaux. For these categories of wine, the period for grape picking will probably last for approximately three weeks.

Harvesting so early, especially the Sémillon variety for dry white wine, aims to preserve the qualities of minerality and freshness.

Forecasts indicate that harvests for red wines should begin around the 10th to 15th September. Bernard Farges, President of the CIVB tells us, “We expected this earliness, we have seen it all the way through the vine’s growth cycle since the end of winter and we’ve also noted it with other fruits such as cherries and peaches. For wine “it is quite a promise of quality”. Early years are generally good vintages, but we will have to wait for the harvests and winemaking to say this with certainty.”

After one of the hottest springs for a century, Bordeaux winegrowers are ready to harvest their grapes at historically early dates…
