Inaugurated in early October after ten years of renovation work, Château Plain Point, now the most imposing in the entire Libournais region, expects 100,000 visitors per year.

For his inaugural address, the 63-year-old Chinese businessman Shi Yuzhu used simple yet impactful words: “By coming here, I bought into a beautiful story, on a great terroir, and with a great team. Whenever I was offered an investment to improve the wine, I spent lavishly. Now it's up to you to tell me the truth about its quality.”

Chinese businessman Shi Yuzhu has owned Plain Point since 2013.

It was October 7th in Fronsac, an appellation located near Libourne. The man who made his fortune in online video games (Giant Interactive Group Corporate Headquarters) celebrated, with great fanfare, the entry of his Château Plain Point into the world of luxury. Ten years of work resulted in facilities designed by architect Olivier Chadebost.

Weddings and Concerts

Built into a hillside and therefore partially underground – Plain Point means “summit” – an imposing building (80 meters long, 18 meters high, 25 meters wide), with immense bay windows, houses three levels of work. First, an entrance hall (1,400 m²) unlike any other in the Bordeaux region. “We’re expecting 100,000 visitors a year, with weddings, concerts, and exhibitions. Two people are specifically assigned to this activity (1),” explains Sandra Gallitre, marketing manager, as she passes the shop where a large, original book stands out, containing a bottle of wine among the pages and information about the venue.

With this Formula 1 venue in hand, it’s up to us to make the most of it.

The levels below are accessible via a majestic, golden-hued spiral staircase. Beneath its glass roof lies the architectural signature of the estate. Nearly 90 vats (stainless steel, wood, concrete) are calibrated to vinify 150 hectares. The château currently has around one hundred – including 10 for white wines, with a dedicated cellar – a number three times smaller when the Chinese investor arrived. “With plot-by-plot vinification and gravity-flow winemaking, we will improve the quality of our wines. With this Formula 1 machine in our hands, it’s up to us to get the most out of it,” predicts Bertrand Bardet, technical director for the past ten years.

The estate hopes to attract more than 100,000 visitors a year to showcase its cellars and sell wine on-site.

The 2023 vintage was the first vinified in these facilities. In the vineyard, some 4 hectares are uprooted and replanted every year to rejuvenate it, adapting the rootstocks and grape varieties. Beneath the fermentation room, the barrel cellar – also accessible via two elevators – resembles a cathedral. Unfortunately, it is far from full: the 2024 and 2025 harvests were quite meager (downy mildew, drought).

A long-term commitment

All these wines, crafted with the teams at Hubert de Boüard Consultant et Associés, are now for sale. “We start from scratch, in collaboration with local brokers and merchants,” explains Bertrand Bardet. At the shop, bottles of red wine, with redesigned packaging, are €40. White and rosé wines are also available.

The château's red wine is sold on-site for €40 a bottle.
