Induction by the Grand Conseil du Vin de Bordeaux – two leading members of the Fiji Islands rugby team

As part of the international European tour in preparation for the World Cup in 2023, the national rugby team from the Fiji Islands came to set up its training camp in Libourne for the week from 23rd to 30th October 2022.

Libourne is set to be the basecamp for the Fijian delegation during the Rugby World Cup 2023, in France.

This forms a great link between Libourne and the Fiji Islands. The team from the south Pacific arrived on 23rd October, for a week’s training in Libourne. Two training sessions were open to the general public at the Jean-Moueix stadium : on Wednesday 26th October at 10 am and on Friday 28th at 6 pm.

On Monday 24th October, the delegation comprised of 30 players and 15 members of staff was received at the Town Hall by the Mayor, Philippe Buissson, in presence of numerous local councillors and head of the local rugby team, RCL. “May Libourne bring you good luck”, said the Mayor as he presented to the town’s medal to coach Vern Cotter and to one of the players, Waisea Nayacalevu. The team say the traditional song in honour of the Fiji Islands « Vanua Domoni ».

At this occasion, the Mayor of Libourne, Philippe Buisson, asked the Grand Conseil du Vin de Bordeaux (GCVB) to induct two key members of the Fijian rugby team, at a ceremony held on Tuesday 25th October, at Château de Sales, in presence of the Bordeaux Wine Brotherhoods federated by the Grand Conseil du Vin de Bordeaux.

The ceremony began at 6 pm and was lead by Jean-Marc Dulong, Vice-Grand Maître, along with Nathalie Escurédo and Benoît Souliès from the Grand Conseil du Vin de Bordeaux, accompanied by numerous Bordeaux Wine Brotherhoods.

Two key members of the Fiji Islands rugby team, the Flying Fijians, were inducted at this exceptional evening event (Willie Nonu Baleinabuli - Manager and Vinaya Habosi - the team's rising star), greatly enjoyed by all the players, who were able to discover Château de Sales and taste a fine selection of Bordeaux wines. Château de Sales, in the Pomerol appellation, is located within the boundaries of the municipality of Libourne.
