Fateful springtime frost drastically reduced the quantity of the future grape harvests. Weather conditions in 2021 (rain while the vine was flowering, hence flower abortion, as well as mixed size berries, low temperatures, but fine weather in autumn) give unusual qualities to Bordeaux wines. 2021 will be a classic vintage of the past, a vintage of freshness.

Harvests of red grapes began around 20th September for plots of Merlot and finished mid-October for Cabernets.

There will be great differences across the region, depending on soils (how excess water and nitrogen were dealt with, in particular for Merlots) and depending on the management of each vineyard (protection to combat mildew, Botrytis…)

Summer rainfall continued up until 8th August and returned during the last part of the month of September. Temperatures remained quite cool too. This combination naturally had an impact on the quantity of sugar in the grapes.

Bordeaux 2021 wines will present marvellous drinkability. In this vintage, we will find the structure and freshness that established, in the past, the excellent reputation of Bordeaux wines.
